SkillsUSA is a national organization that serves trade, industrial, technical, and health occupation students in public high schools, vocational centers, area vocational schools, and two-year colleges.
SkillsUSA has over a quarter million student members annually, organized into more than 14,000 chapters and 52 state and territorial associations (including Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands).
SkillsUSA is an applied method of preparing America's high performance workers in public vocational-technical programs. It provides quality education experiences for students in leadership, teamwork, citizenship, and character development. It builds and reinforces self-confidence, work attitudes, and communications skills. It emphasizes total quality at work, high ethical standards, superior work skills, life-long education, and pride in the dignity of work. It also promotes understanding of the free enterprise system and involvment in community service activities.
Currently some 15,000 teachers and school administrators served as professional SkillsUSA members and instructors. More than 400 corporations, trade associations, and labor unions actively support National SkillsUSA through financial aid, in-kind contributions, and involvement of their people in SkillsUSA activities. Many more work directly with state associations and local chapters.
SkillsUSA programs include local, state, and national competions in which students demonstrate occupational and leadership skills. At the annual National SkillsUSA United States Skills Championships, nearly 3,600 students compete in 53 occupational and leadership skill areas. SkillsUSA programs also help to establish industry standards for job skill training in the classroom.
Rhode Island was established in 1976. Rhode Island is the largest vocational student organization in the state with over 2300 members.
